Overview
Cats have two anal glands (or sacs) just inside their bottom, which produce a dark, smelly, oily liquid every time a poo is passed. The liquid is expressed onto the poo, and its strong scent helps to mark your cat's territory. These sacs are smaller than the size of a pea. They usually function normally, but problems can develop, and treatment may be necessary for anal gland blockages, infections and abscesses.
